Dog’s instinctively love to seek shelter in enclosures. A dog kennel serves exactly this purpose. This purpose may be rendered invalid if a pet kennel is not used appropriately. For example, if you confine your dog to his kennel when he makes a mistake, he will associate his kennel with punishment and will develop an aversion towards it. Therefore if you want your pet to be himself and enjoy his kennel, you must help him associate it with a pleasant experience. Placing a treat bowl and occasionally secretly placing some treats in it will keep your dog going back to his kennel.

There are times when you do not want your dog in the house. Leaving it out in the porch may seem fine but how happy will your dog be? A dog is a social animal and likes to be around its family. If it can’t the next best thing is to provide it a place of its own, like a dog kennel. A nice comfortable dog kennel will enable you to keep you dog outside without feeling guilty at leaving him at the mercy of the elements because he will have his own “inside” to go to. Dogs like to have their own space and once they get used to the dog kennel, they will enjoy spending time there.

The first thing you need to keep in mind when buying a dog kennel is that is big enough for your dog to stand up and turn around in comfortably. The kennel should also be large enough to place a water bowl and a few small toys in. Keeping dog kennels clean is important and the easiest way to do this is to buy one with a detachable roof that can be removed for easy access to the interior. If you live in an area that gets a lot of rain, buying a dog kennel which is on a slightly raised platform will prevent water from entering.

One way to choose dog kennels is by asking the veterinarians if the place you have chosen does a good job at rearing pets. Ask around if there have been any complaints again the dog kennels you’re considering. See the ‘testimonials’ of other people who have already bought a pet at one of these places; it should give you a fair idea about the place. Generally, these shelters are given a certificate and see if these standards are met at this place. Take someone who has a pet to these places and ask them if they think that the dogs have been groomed well. Ultimately, you would have to go with your gut feeling!
